Red Star is a member of the Atlantic White Cedar family, and is a Chamaecyparis with multiple uses in landscapes. Also has seasonal interests due to foliage color changes in winter.
This Chamaecyparis variety has very dense, soft, foliage that is a beautiful blue / green color throughout the growing season, than changes to a purplish plum color with the onset of colder weather in the winter. Foliage returns to blue / green once springtime rolls around, but the color change is very attractive, and gives a seasonal change to the landscape.
Growth habit is mostly columnar, with mature width seldom reaching more than 3-4 feet. Mature height eventually tops out at about 15 feet. Makes an excellent accent plant, and can also be effectively grown in a small group setting of 3 - 4 trees - arranged however you might desire. Works very well against buildings, helps hide gutter downspouts, etc. Placed around corners of houses / buildings makes a great colorful accent......once again, with winter interest due to the foliage change in winter.
